My interviewee today is a film director, producer, and screenwriter.
He was nominated for the Oscar for Best Director in 2002 and for the Golden Globe in 2005, in addition to other national and international awards.
He graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from FAUSP, but since he presented a film as his final course project, he devoted himself to cinema and founded a production company.
One of his first films, City of God, represents a milestone in the history of Brazilian cinema.

I am still here, obviously impacted, from having watched Two Popes.
And I wanted to start by asking... I usually start at the beginning.

But I'll start from the end, because yesterday the Ibirapuera Auditorium was packed.
And people acclaimed the film, which moved the entire audience.

So, how did the idea arise?
What went through your head to tackle this?

So, actually, I was invited to make this film in 2015.

Actually, I was invited to make a film about Papa Francisco.

And I am a big fan of Papa Francisco.

But I couldn't at the time, because I got involved in directing the Olympic opening, together with Daniela Thomas and Andrusha, so I said, ah, I can't do it, and the idea remained.

When I finished the Olympics, the same producer came back and said, look, do you still want to make that film, we have a script here, and sent me the script.

And I like Papa Francisco because I think he is one of the most important voices in the world today.

He sees the world as one thing, he sees that the guy... What is done in Canada affects the person who is suffering.

He tries to build bridges, he tries to understand, he calls it Casa Comum in Laudato Si, his encyclical, Our Common Home, and he understands that.

And the world today doesn't want to build walls, this idea of nationalism, which I really think... So I love the Pope, I said, I want to meet this Pope, and there's nothing better than a film to get to know someone, right?

You dive in, you meet the people who met him.

That was the motivation.
And from the beginning the idea of the script was the combination, it was the dialogue between the two.

This screenwriter Anthony McCartney, a good English screenwriter, a guy who had some Oscars, Oscar nominations, actually created a play that was just a dialogue between Bento XVI and the Pope.

This American producer liked it and asked him to adapt the play itself into a screenplay.

So, when I received it, I already received the script.

I read the play and then received the finished screenplay.

And it was a very interesting, very intelligent dialogue.

A hell of a difficult film, because at bottom it's two older guys talking about religion.
