So, ma'am, you're now in your seventh year in the National Congress.

From when you entered until now, is it less difficult to be a woman in politics and in the National Congress?

Definitely.
It's moving at a very slow pace.
And speaking about my specific experience, I think there are two things that happen.
The more I bother people, the more attacks I receive.
So, when I denounce the 'PEC of banditry', when I denounce the entry of the PCC into the city of São Paulo, when I confront a politician who is doing something that isn't right, or simply when I have the courage to stand up for what I think is right.
Even if that isn't what the majority thinks.
The problem isn't just that I receive criticism.
It's that I receive threats.
Death threats, threats of rape.
It's that my mother and my brother start to receive things.
We receive letters at home.
And then, people, this goes beyond any limit.
So, on the one hand, the more the work progresses, the more I bother people.
And the more attacks I receive.
On the other hand, in Congress, people have had to learn to respect me.
I'm short.
I have a softer voice, as they say.
I look like a girl, as they also say.
So, I think when they saw me they'd say, 'and a girl?','26':'Just speak louder and she'll bow her head.'
You just have to speak more loudly and she'll bow her head.
But I'm feisty.
And I think you already know that.
So I also make it clear that, with respect... I know what my place is, I know what your place is, I know what my struggle is and I will continue.
So that thing that happened at the start—being attacked by colleagues, being disrespected, being interrupted, them making jokes about me—that stopped.
Because they know I'll fight back and I won't bow my head to any man.
So, on the one hand, in Congress today, do they respect me more?
But overall, they attack me more as well.
And then every now and then we have some situations.
In the mayoral campaign in São Paulo, I had to hear from a party president, who was Waldermar da Costa Neto, president of the PL, that I couldn't be a candidate because I wasn't a politician's daughter, because I didn't come from an important family.
And then I had to stop the campaign to say, look, being the daughter of a house cleaner and a bus fare collector is actually what gives me the greatest legitimacy to be in politics.
So, just to show that... You can have six years as a federal deputy under your belt, more than 20 approved bills, sanitary pads in schools, 4 million young people receiving a nest egg, and some men will still turn to you on national TV and say that Tabata doesn't have the right to be a candidate.
The fight is big, but we're not going to get discouraged.
