I was the first child of a mother who left her husband, because we came from Pernambuco to find my father, because he left my mother pregnant with me in 1950 and came to São Paulo.
In 1952 we went after him and instead of finding the father who had left Pernambuco, we found a man married to another woman and with a bunch of kids.
My mother with eight children, all minors, had the courage and the dignity to turn her back on my father and took us to live in a shanty.
And she alone raised eight children and her little youngest... became President of the Republic of this country, to whom I owe the upbringing and education I had.
And it's exactly this story that I want you to engrave in your heads.
No one at your age has the right to give up.
No one.
No matter how much difficulty there is at home, no matter how much financial difficulty there is.
