My father pushed me a lot to study engineering at the Military Institute of Engineering (IME).
He would say, 'go there, it's an excellent engineering course,' or whatever.
Gosh, I managed to get into the IME.
It was a dream.

In my last year at IME, I discovered I had cancer.
And then I wanted to take a leave of absence.

I ran into in the hallway someone who was a kind of mentor to me at IME.
A colonel named Ronaldo Glicério Cabral.
This guy was my calculus professor; when I entered IME he worked in the institute's nuclear engineering department.
This guy, the son of a corporal, came in first.
In his course he was top-ranked.
From his IME course, he went on to do a master's and a PhD in reactor physics at MIT.
And he was a professor, and he turned to me, 'Tarsísio, none of that.'
I'll speak to the commander of the student corps; there we'll excuse your absences, you'll continue the course.
I said, how am I going to do the course?
Undergoing cancer treatment?
I'm going to have surgery, I'll have to undergo radiotherapy.
And he said, 'You will do it.'
That was enough.
I decided I wouldn't take a leave of absence; I'd complete the course.
I did the course, I finished that semester with an average of 9.74, I graduated first in my class.
