Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen Senators, it is an honor to return to the rostrum of the Federal Senate to address the Brazilian people at a time when we are witnessing facts that are worrisome – and Your Excellency, Senator Girão, has brought some of those facts here.
About: preserve the democratic rule of law
For a long time we have been denouncing from this rostrum of the Federal Senate abuses, outrages, and disregard for the Federal Constitution, and this is very bad, it weakens the democratic rule of law and undermines democracy itself.
This is very harmful to the country, to national life!
About: respect the presumption of innocence and exercise caution in investigations
I imagine the law students who are in law schools today, when they are taught about constitutional values, about the principles of the Federal Constitution, about what the rule of law is, due process of law, full defense, and the adversarial principle, confronting the narrative, the rhetoric, the teaching in the classroom within an academic environment and what they witness outside the academic environment in real life, what is happening and, regrettably, involving the highest Court of this country.
The Filipe Martins case is an emblematic case.

As if the action that culminated in the conviction of former President Bolsonaro and a number of other men and women, in what became nationally known as the plot of the coup, in a tainted process, in an incompetent forum, with judges clearly disqualified from judging, were not enough, we have a person who today is imprisoned on an accusation of a crime that did not occur – imprisoned for a crime that was not committed, for a trip he did not take, for a meeting he did not attend, yet remains in prison.
