The first thing people said when I came to contest the pre-candidacy for the Senate, at the invitation of President Lula and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, as one of the opponents put it, was to say the following: 'São Paulo belongs to Paulistas, not to anyone else,' and that I would be an outsider like so many others.
And my response was exactly this.
São Paulo would be nothing without this wonderful mix of peoples, starting with foreign immigrants, of whom my grandparents were part — I am the granddaughter of Lebanese immigrants who came to the state of São Paulo before moving to Mato Grosso do Sul.
And if it weren't for the people who came from all corners, and I strongly cited the Northeastern people, who made and continue to make the history of this great land that is São Paulo — which is without a doubt the largest state, the strongest, and the richest state of the Brazilian Federation.
And if you'll allow me a joke, since this is a podcast, one of the happiest moments, Magno — I think one day you should write this, journalists who are listening — because there are times when some people are enlightened.
In a speech at my joining the PSB, Geraldo Alckmin, who is very playful and knows how to tell a joke like few others, right?

And he was governor of São Paulo four times, so he has legitimacy for that.
He said like this: 'Simone, come calmly, don't worry, because São Paulo... It's the only place in the world where a Japanese person speaks Portuguese with an Italian accent.'
That's the wonder of Brazil, that's the wonder of São Paulo, isn't it?
It embraces, as it has embraced everyone, this mixture of blood, races, and languages, right?
That has been contagious and that has made this state so successful, right?

Because that's how it was — it's funny, President Lula has these ways; you learn to know leaders: he is very ceremonious with people who are not from his party. I am part of a broad front; he knows I'm a centrist, and although our relationship is very close — we used to meet constantly — it wasn't President Lula who made the offer; he acted as an intermediary. It started with the president of the PT, who drew things together, and then came the official invitation, at the request, obviously, of a political group, and the person who officially invited me was Vice President Geraldo Alckmin.
