And I'm asking what you're thinking, going into this COP, how we're going to...
or how are you going to assure the world, or project to the world, that this mission is still underway?
A challenge against people who believed that we couldn't hold a COP in the Amazon.
And when we decided to hold the COP here in the State of Pará, we already knew the conditions of the state, we already knew the conditions of the city.
I've known Belém since 1975.
And we decided to hold it here because we didn't want comfort.
We wanted challenges.
And we wanted the world to come to see the Amazon.
Once, I gave an interview to a Swedish journalist and she told me that, when she was little, her father had bought a plot of land for her in the Amazon.
Not a plot, I think one square metre that he had bought, which was to help with the maintenance of the Amazon.
And she was almost fifty and she had never seen that plot, she had never seen the land.
So, the Amazon is something that arouses a lot of curiosity in people.
Everyone places on us the responsibility for maintaining our forest, our fauna, our waters — in other words, a very great force, a very great hope for beneficial results for the planet.
I never forget that, in the 1980s, I traveled the world.
And people would say, it's because you must take care of the Amazon, because the Amazon is the lung of the world, it's the lung of the world.
And at the time I would say, but external debt is our pneumonia, so it's necessary to help us take care of our lung, because the debt is unpayable.
Well, what happens is that this challenge we took on, today I'm sure... that we will put on the best COP of all COPs ever held to date.
We have already done the best G20, we've already done the best Bricks, and we will put on the best COP of all.
First, because the venue is wonderful, it's prepared to receive anyone who wants to come here.
Second, because the infrastructure is good, there is a good security system for all our staff.
And third, because the people of Belém are a very joyful people, extraordinarily joyful, so any foreign guest will feel at home here in the city of Belém.
Fourth, because we have an enviable cuisine.
I think that foreigners who are here, when they sit at the table and begin to see the diversity of our cuisine, will leave very proud to have known the city, the people, the COP facilities, and will leave a little bit fatter, because they will eat well and be well treated.
Another important thing is that I've been saying that this COP needs to be the COP of truth, because everything started with Rio '92.
It all started.
Since then, we've had several setbacks; many decisions were taken, many decisions were not implemented.
For a long time we've been fighting to establish at the UN governance capable of demanding the enforcement of what we decide on environmental issues, because if there isn't approval by nation-states, we can't put anything into practice.
Key protocols have not been implemented — the Paris Agreement.
Many are not complying; many still haven't submitted their NDCs.
So this COP will be a COP that we will begin with presentations by some scientists.
Because one of the things placed before us, heads of state, is for us to tell humanity and the people we represent whether we believe or not in science.
whether we trust or not what science is predicting for the world's climatic events.
I am one of those who believe.
Therefore, since I believe, I think we must begin working to prevent the harms that are being predicted from taking place.
We, human beings, have the intelligence to avoid that.
So, this COP... it will be called the Cup of Truth.
