Some people think meritocracy doesn't exist.
Some people think that just believing strongly is enough for everything to happen.
Both sides are wrong.
And Wesley's story proves that.
Wesley is 18, lives in Cajazeiras, in Salvador, in one of Brazil's largest housing complexes.

Him, his three siblings, his mother, who works as a cleaner, and his father, a bricklayer.
He attended public school his whole life.
He prepared for the Enem at home, on his own.

The result?
First overall in medicine at USP through the Enem.
The most contested university in Latin America.
The most competitive program in the country.
He is the first in his entire family to attend university.
Just saying it gives me goosebumps.
But there's a problem.
With this story, it's very easy, very tempting indeed, to turn Wesley into two things.
First, the lone hero.
The genius who won on his own.
Which is the myth of pure meritocracy.

You just have to want it.
People say.
Second, to say that he is the exception that proves the rule.
The outlier that doesn't change anything.
He made it, but what about the other millions?
There are others who say.
Both readings are easy, but wrong and lazy.
Because look at what Wesley's story really shows.
Does he have merit?
Of course he does.
He studied like few do, woke early, persisted.
That's his, and nobody can take it away.
But he also had a mother who, even unemployed, didn't pull him out of school to make him work.
He had a father who, even earning little, didn't discourage his son with that line about university—
that it's not for people like us.
