How much is your data worth?
Google alone made 234 billion dollars in profit last year.
Meta's profit was 164 billion dollars; Meta controls Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Of that, 162 billion, more than 95% of the total, came from selling advertising based on your data.
Maybe a lot of people still haven't stopped to ask themselves.
How do these big techs make so much money, when the service, the app, is free for everyone?
They do it by selling you in digital pieces.
Just look at how the business works.
Companies store your browsing history and online purchases (in Google's case), and your pattern of likes, shares, and comments (in the case of social networks), and they build an exact profile.
They know where you want to travel for vacation, what team you support, which candidate you intend to vote for.
Anyway, what you think, your taste profile, your location, your movement patterns from Google Maps and so on.
From that, companies have a detailed, fine-grained profile — what do they use it for?
To sell that data to other companies, resulting in a very targeted ad reaching you.
For example... From your Google searches or your preferences on social networks, if it's noticed that you're very concerned about the security of your home, several ads for security cameras, security companies, alarms start appearing for you, because they sell that sponsored content.

Who hasn't searched about a certain country, I don't know, Italy, Mexico, and suddenly started receiving a bunch of offers for travel packages, discounted flights to those places or nearby locations?
That's how it works.
Or worse, how many examples are there of people who were talking with a friend about a car they wanted to buy and suddenly car promotions start appearing on their phone.
As if the phone were listening to you.
But could it be that it actually was?
The sale of advertising by the big techs, which may seem harmless, is actually a complete violation of your... privacy and also involves the commission of crimes.
We talk about eavesdropping — is the phone listening to you, or not?
Look, last year, in 2024, Google was the target of a legal action over illegal eavesdropping in the United States.
That action is still ongoing and the complaint has already been accepted.
Now, last month, May 2025... Google received a billion-dollar fine, $1.3 billion, from the state of Texas in the United States for misuse of georeferencing, for using people's Google Maps location data, for facial biometrics and, on top of that, believe it or not, for storing the search data people make in Google Chrome's incognito mode.
So when you're there and you go to search something in incognito mode, forget it.
Your data is being collected all the same.
And it wasn't just in the United States, no.
Meta, for example, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, was fined €1.2 billion for illegally transferring European users' data to the United States.
And here in Brazil... Now Meta has been cited by the National Data Protection Agency for using MetaIA, an artificial intelligence tool that started appearing on your Zap.
You know when you open Zap and that thing pops up?
Search on MetaIA to use that data, violating the Brazilian General Data Protection Law.
In the hustle and bustle of daily life and in the frenetic pace of using social media, maybe we don't pay much attention to it.
But in practice, folks, what is being sold... It's your behavior, your actions, your tastes, it's you.
Divided into many little digital pieces and being turned into a commodity by the big techs.
Allowing a level of control and profitability over even the simplest things — your desires, your dreams — captured by the social media algorithm.
And they sell it.
You, without you having any share.
In fact, data are being stolen from Brazilian citizens and from citizens around the world.
That's why, in several countries around the world, there are legislative initiatives so that the big techs, since they use your data as a business model, at least pay for it.
