We have to be like the demanding mother.
The mother demands a lot.
Who here has never had, or never been led by, that person who at some point in your life you wanted to wring their neck?
And eventually you realized that person wanted my best.
Demanding, being demanding, holding people accountable means respecting talent, respecting ability, because you only demand of someone who can deliver something to you.
If the person can't deliver... If the person doesn't have that capacity, you won't hold them accountable, because it would be a waste of time.
So, holding people accountable is a way of respecting talent.
It's a way of respecting ability.
I once had a professor at IME, a guy who liked to give very difficult exams.
And he gave a very difficult exam, and I spent half an hour looking at it, and I said, I didn't even know where to start.
After a while the insight came, and I ran to see if there was time to do the exam within the allotted time.
And when the exam ended, I turned it in just at the last minute.
I said, 'Come on, professor.'
What a tough exam.
He turned to me and said, 'Tarcísio, the day I give you an easy exam, I'm not respecting your ability.'
Now, at the same time that a leader is someone who demands, someone who holds people accountable because he knows the team can deliver, the leader is also someone who takes care.
Demand on one hand, care on the other.
