I understand how the Bolsonaro family has been living through a time of great anguish, even desperation, seeing their own father imprisoned there without yet having been tried.
All of this causes outrage.
Sometimes the behavior is one that, for me as a doctor, I have already encountered in similar situations.
I understand them, because, you know, as a surgeon — and I've always been a trauma surgeon — I was, for many years, the one who worked
in Rio de Janeiro, in emergency hospitals, so I handled the most serious, polytrauma cases.
So, you had two kinds of people accompanying patients.
The one who would arrive with his son and say, 'look, please, my son is gravely ill, my son is in God's hands and in yours, please.'
Save my son.
And others would come and say, 'look, my son is gravely ill, and if he dies, I'll come back later to settle the score with you.'
So I'm saying this because none of that changed our surgical practice in the least; it didn't change our ability
to work there full-time to save lives.
And in any case, we did both; we treated them the same, with the same dedication that comes from my training as a physician to save lives.
