The 50% tariff in the United States comes into effect in a few days.
But here the taxation of the Brazilian people's patience is already at 100%.
Think about it: on one side a political group, out of pure ideology, colludes with the American government in a blackmail scheme to try to influence our sovereignty purely out of personal interest.
This is unacceptable.
Democracy is a value that can never be at stake.
I was at the demonstrations that repudiated the attacks of January 8, 2023, and I have always defended democracy.
If it is at risk on one side, we all have to be on the other.
There is no debate about that.
Now, what is up for debate is the other political group that has the responsibility to lead the country at this moment, which, out of pure ideology, supports and aligns itself with dictatorships and keeps making blustery attacks against one of our largest trading partners in the world.
One thing leads to another.
One tries to shout louder than the other.
The fight continues, and while both sides insist on being right, the Brazilian people just want to be happy.
With the polarization that's out there, who can see how we're going to get out of this?
We can't give in to absurdity, but it's also not enough to simply be right.
Take a look at the editorials of Brazil's three main newspapers.
In Folha... more effort is needed in negotiations over the tariff.
And it highlights that, while President Lula seeks to score politically with the American threat, several sectors of the economy are already reaping the losses.
O Globo issues an appeal.
Lula needs to send the chancellor to the United States before the end of the month.
And it emphasizes that, as long as verbal confrontations prevail in the political arena, there will be no agreement.
Estadão, finally, calls attention to the issue.
Brazil pays the price for Lula's recklessness.
This is not the time to insist on being right.
It's time to resolve it.
It's time to foster common sense, not a power struggle.
Polarization is the enemy of Brazil.
Therefore, I am an enemy of polarization.
Brazil belongs to Brazilians.
And the Brazilian people do not want anyone destroyed.
Brazilians are known for their joy, not for hatred or broken relationships.
We have always been friends of the world; we are welcoming, we want to live in peace, not at war with one another.
Brazil belongs to Brazilians, yes, but Brazil must also stand for balance, serenity, and sound judgment.
This must be our side: the side of Brazilians, the side of businesses, of jobs, and the side of Brazil's future.
