Mr. President, honorable Senator Jaime Bagattoli, whom I greet for the initiative of this important solemn session of tributes.
I warmly greet all those who sit at the table at this moment, and especially our honoree Assis Canuto.
It is a joy and an honor to have Canuto with us.
I greet Mrs. Lenita Simões Canuto, who today forms part of the honor guard at the dais of the Federal Senate, at a historic and extremely meaningful moment, I am sure, for Canuto's life and trajectory, a trajectory that has been built alongside you.
So this is a tribute paid to two illustrious figures to whom Rondônia owes much gratitude and respect for their achievements in my State of Rondônia.
(Applause.) I would like to greet Sandra Melo, our President of PL Mulher of my State of Rondônia.
I would like to extend a very special greeting to each of the gentlemen and ladies who attend this session of tribute.
There are so many people, many of whom I know. I would like to make a special mention of Prof. Antônia.
Thank you very much for being here. Today I felt doubly honored by the presence of the Professor and by Canuto's remarks.
I had prepared an outline, a script, to share at today's session, but, listening to Canuto here, I am being prompted to abandon the script, because I hope to have the longevity that Canuto has and will continue to have for a long time, but with the quality of memory that he has, of the reasoning he demonstrates, with the knowledge he lays out...
The Federal Senate offers you this tribute, this recognition, but it is your presence here and your speech that honor us; they honor the State of Rondônia.
You have conveyed here not only a large portion of the history of the State of Rondônia, but you also brought the perspective of someone who knew Rondônia at its beginning: how it was conceived, how it was made, how each of its regions was built and developed, and you connected that heroic, historical, structural past with the vision of someone who is looking ahead of his time.
And, as you mentioned here — it is true, I wish to testify to that — like many other families, my family went to Rondônia within that context.
Originally from the State of Espírito Santo, they arrived there in the 1970s and went to live in the countryside, on a farm.
In truth, that was their fate; that was the path for those who came from outside.
