Sérgio Moro: In the past, a criminal action could only proceed if the House authorized it.
Sérgio Moro: That change was salutary, because the previous regime brought serious cases of impunity, a feeling of impunity, recalling that famous and unfortunate Federal Deputy who was involved, down in the Amazon, with organized crime and even used a chainsaw to kill and mutilate his victims.
So we must not go back to that time. Investigations should not depend on any prior authorization by the National Congress; we should maintain the current regime that an action may be impeded, yes, if there is a pronouncement by the House opposing the continuation of the criminal action.
Sérgio Moro: And, of course, such an impediment can only occur if it is concluded that the criminal prosecution has political motivations or, possibly, that due process or the rights, in some way, of the accused have been violated.
Sérgio Moro: So perhaps we can have great progress stemming from the obstruction carried out last week, from the verification of these cases of abuses and excesses committed by the STF (Supreme Federal Tribunal).
