Sérgio Moro: It is a bill of my authorship. When that PCC plan to kidnap or kill me, or my family, was discovered at the beginning of 2023, that whole episode led me to draft a bill that would make clear that the planning of attacks, murders or the commission of serious violence, conspiracy or arrangements by organized crime against law enforcement agents, in retaliation for the work carried out against organized crime, would be considered a crime in itself — that is, it would not be necessary to wait for the start of the execution of the crime, because that would involve a situation of absolute risk for that conduct to be considered a crime.
Sérgio Moro: This allows the State, the police, to intervene in advance, within the criminal trajectory, better protecting the legal interests, in particular the life and bodily integrity of law enforcement agents.
So it passed. As soon as it is sanctioned by the President — I believe it will be sanctioned, I do not foresee a veto, although anything is possible — we will have greater legal protection for the law enforcement agents who fight organized crime.
Sérgio Moro: And we need to protect them, because if we do not act in this way we will expose not only them but their families to risks, and, over time, no one will be willing to face this challenge and these risks.
Sérgio Moro: If law enforcement agents put themselves at risk to protect society against organized crime, it is our duty, as a society, through public authority, to provide the necessary instruments to protect them as well.
