Sérgio Moro: In the 1980s, in Sicily, in Italy, Senator, there was a very serious problem with the Sicilian mafia called Cosa Nostra, which lived in a regime of impunity.
Sérgio Moro: The great bosses were never arrested, were not troubled by the judicial system or by the police, mainly because they did their work professionally, but because of the rule of omertà, that pact of silence among criminals.
However, courageous magistrates, together with police and equally brave prosecutors, began to change that situation in the mid-1980s, led mainly by Judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
Sérgio Moro: They even organized a process called the Maxi Trial, in which hundreds of mafiosi were tried at the same time and more than three hundred were convicted, including, for the first time, leaders of organized crime.
Sérgio Moro: But organized crime sought to retaliate and, unfortunately, in 1992 both Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were assassinated by the Cosa Nostra in bomb attacks.
