I ended the day in Rio de Janeiro alongside students awarded in the 20th edition of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (Obmep). In all, more than 8,500 students from all regions were awarded, 682 of them with gold medals. Organized since 2005 by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), Obmep shows how education opens opportunities and transforms lives. The Olympiad brings together more than 18 million students annually, and this awards ceremony comes at a time of strengthening policies aimed at mathematics teaching in basic education. In addition to supporting Obmep, MEC coordinates the National Commitment 'All Mathematics' (Compromisso Nacional Toda Matemática), an initiative that seeks to expand student learning across the country. Education is the foundation and the path to the development of the country and society.
